Three principles of garden design apply to the overall "feel" of the landscape: namely, proportion, transition and unity. Landscape plants should be arranged so as to conform to these principles.
Proportion is the sense that the size of the individual components (the landscape plants) or groups of components in a landscape is consistent with the landscape as a whole. In other words, the idea behind proportion is very similar to that behind the basic element, scale.
But the difference is that, while scale is a neutral term, proportion is based on the premise that something is either in proportion or out of proportion. A garden design that is out of proportion is one that is marred by abrupt transitions or by the lack of transition.
For instance, a five-foot high stone wall might elegantly set off a large home, but would make a small home look all the smaller. The landscaping of the latter suffers from a lack of transition: the height of the wall is too close to that of the house. Transition, simply put, refers to gradual change.
Some common items used in renovating backyards include:
• Backyard barbeque grills– this is a staple for the American summer. Start it up and invite friends over for the Fourth of July.
• Fire pits – in a broad sense this is any outdoor structure that controls a fire. For modern yards they refer to in closed metal structures elevated off the ground that provide a campfire like setting in your backyard.
• Patio heaters – these provide warmth so you can stay outdoors and entertain your guests during all but the coldest evenings.
• Backyard ponds – these provide color, sound, and life to your yard and require much less maintenance than they did just 20 years ago when they would have only been seen on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.
• Backyard pools – these can help make your yard more of a home away from home and save you from long drives to the beach. Above ground options make these more affordable than ever, but sunk in concrete pools are for long-term investment.
Playground equipment- If you have small children, a playground in your backyard is a very nice commodity.
Finally, if you choose to work with a landscape architect make sure you check out examples of his or her work and feel comfortable with your designer’s personality before signing a contract to renovate your backyard. If you want something simple, you can probably do it yourself, with help from your local depot store. Garden statues or simply planting flowers can add life to your backyard.
