Backyard ponds
If you thought backyard ponds could only be found on Lifestyles
of the Rich and Famous, it's time to think again. It is true that for
many years pond ownership required tremendous amounts of man-hours and
was impossible for the average American to afford. An army of landscapers
was required to beat back algae, to fix leaks, and to repair pumps.
Today's technologies and scientific discoveries have made backyard
ponds and water gardens low maintenance. It is comforting to know that
if you run an ecologically balanced water garden nature will do most
of the work. A good ecosystem pond with mechanical and biological filtration,
plants, fish, and plenty of rocks require less do not need constant
cleaning.
In fact, backyard ponds should have a good proportion of green algae.
Whereas it was once thought that ponds had to be spotless and took so
much work, we now realize a good amount of green algae can be healthy.
It’s part of a fish's diet and should be welcomed as part of the
ecology of the pond.
